Olympic hope Bromby heads for Brazil
brings in 1996 with a couple of Star Class regattas in Brazil and Miami, Florida, as his build-up to next Summer's Olympics kicks into top gear.
Bromby and crew Lee White will leave the Island tomorrow, headed first to Buzios, Brazil for the South American Championships which start next Thursday.
The regatta will include six races.
From there the pair will travel to Rio de Janeiro for the World Championships which takes place from January 10 to 20. A stopover in Miami is also planned, with Bromby and White bidding to defend their title in the Miami Can Ams.
While in Miami the Bermudians will also be training with a new coach. "All three are grade A regattas and we're hoping to do our best,'' said Bromby yesterday. "We're going out there with an open mind. We're feeling capable of winning the World Championships, and this is the first time we will have gone into the World Championships feeling this way.'' Bromby, who reckons he participated in about 10 overseas races this year, will spend most of the first part of 1996 overseas as he and White gear up to the Olympic Games. He and triple jumper Brian Wellman will be two of Bermuda's best medal hopes.
"We're sailing into the Olympics now, and this is the beginning of seven months of sailing,'' Bromby said. "We won't be home for more than two weeks at a time and not until February.
"We will be based in Miami until the first of April and then we'll go to Savannah, the Olympic (sailing) site. We're going high gear right now.''
