Stars, Rangers face test of resilience

Premier Division cricket, with the gap even more noticeable between the top teams and the bottom teams.

Last week's low scores, which saw new club PHC sink to a record low score of 22, have increased the call for a quick return to the "Super Eight'' format that was used with such success a few years ago.

An average of three teams a week have failed to score over 100 runs so far this season with PHC, Social Club and Warwick the biggest culprits. In four matches so far PHC have had scores of 50, 51 and 22 with their only score of more than 100 being against Western Stars in their second match when they batted for 50 overs in scoring 105 for five.

Social Club and Warwick have also found the going rough with Social Club scoring just 73 in the opening round of the Central Counties last weekend against Western Stars. The next day they managed 103 against Flatts.

Warwick made 49 against Somerset in their opening match of the season and followed up with 27 against Police before being dismissed for just 71 by Bailey's Bay last weekend.

Bay, who presently lead the league on strike rate share over St. George's, should not only stay at the top but could also have another short day if their opponents, PHC, bat first at Sea Breeze Oval.

Bay and St. George's are the only two teams with perfect records after last weekend saw Southampton and Western Stars depart from the ranks of the unbeaten. St. George's, with Dean Minors expected out for his first game of the season, should be favoured over a Hamilton Parish team at Wellington Oval even though their batting has been weakened by the absence through injuries of captain and vice-captain Wendell Smith and Graham Fox and Anthony Trott.

Western Stars host Southampton in the day's top match with both teams anxious to stay in touch with the leaders. The losers could slip further down the standings especially with Somerset Bridge and Willow Cuts joining them on six points.

"Certainly we're looking for the win,'' said Rangers captain Ricky Brangman who saw his team lose to Cleveland last weekend.

"Going down against Cleveland was one of those things. We're looking to get back on track with a win. We had a good session on Tuesday and Thursday...the morale of the team is still high. Everything's all right, there's no problem.'' Stars went down to Devonshire Rec. in their last outing as the home team bounced back from an indifferent start to the season. Tomorrow, Rec. face another tough match when they travel to nearby Police field to take on a Police side that suffered a humiliating loss to Somerset Bridge who scored nearly 300 runs while batting second.

Tomorrow, Bridge take on Cleveland in a mid-table clash while Willow Cuts and Somerset should be favoured over lowly Warwick and Social Club. Flatts entertain St. David's in the other match.
