emergencies when the liner, filled mostly by retirees, paid a one-day visit on Thursday en route to America from England.

The ship sent out a request for an ambulance about 10 p.m. on Wednesday after a 56-year-old crew member suffered a suspected heart attack.

A pilot boat went out to meet the ship and took the man to Ordnance Island where he was picked up by ambulance at 6.30 a.m.

Ms Sylvia Swainson, of agents Harnett and Richardson, said he was in hospital in stable condition yesterday.

Later on, the ship sent out a request for a second ambulance to attend Albuoy's Point. A female passenger complaining of back problems was picked up from the ship's tender at about 9.30 a.m. and taken to hospital.

And in the afternoon, a passenger fainted while on board a tender going back to the ship.

Ms Swainson said the ship had been caught in two storms crossing the Atlantic Ocean, which had delayed it and caused discomfort to passengers.

"They all seemed happy to be on land yesterday,'' she said. "General comments from what they saw of the Island was that they wished they could have stayed longer.'' The ship, which recently underwent a refit -- but kept all ofher teak panelling -- is not scheduled to visit Bermuda again until 1995.
