Talks continue on tri-nation tourney

A deal that could bring England and two other Test nations to Bermuda for a triangular one-day cricket tournament at the end of September is being negotiated by a four-man committee.

Bermuda Cricket Board of Control president El James said this week that the idea -- raised earlier this year -- was being seriously considered and progress was being made in investigating the logistics of staging such a tournament.

The proposal was made two months ago by Andrew Wildblood, cricket representative for the International Management Group (IMG).

James said he wasn't sure what stage current negotiations had reached, but added: "There is a four-man committee working with Andrew right now. I can't divulge anything other than the fact that they are working on it.

"We have put together a schedule that is very flexible. If anything happens it will be at the end of the season, but I haven't had an update from the committee in recent weeks.

"We have a very competent group of individuals looking into this entire matter and because we are talking about top Test nations being involved there are a lot of major issues to take into consideration such as availability of players, various expenses and the time most suitable for such a visit.'' Wildblood, who couldn't be reached for comment this week, confirmed in January that he wanted to put together a competition which could possibly include England, India and Pakistan.

In the past he has organised matches in Toronto between India and Pakistan and he visited the Island for last season's Cup Match to get an indication of the type of cricketing atmosphere generated by the occasion.

He admitted to being impressed by what he saw.

"I want to put together a triangular tournament ideally involving England and two other nations. But to get the teams together requires a lot of jumping through hoops and cutting through hedges,'' he said in January.

Wildblood noted that the cricket calendar was "very cluttered'' and it would not be easy to find times when the teams could travel here.

There were reports some weeks ago that suggested India and Pakistan were being considered for a similar triangular tournament in England at the end of this year's county season.
