The uniformed officer was interviewing the 18-year-old's parents, in Channel View Lane, Hamilton Parish, when the apparent surprise attack happened.

Police said he was struck on the head with a stick a number of times before the parents pulled the youth off him.

The officer was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was treated and later released.

It is understood the youth then locked himself in the house which was surrounded by Police reinforcements who rushed to the scene when they heard their colleague was being attacked.

He gave himself up after around 15 minutes and he was taken to Hamilton Police Station where he will be held in custody over the weekend.
