Last month Police, Colonial Insurance and MicroTrack Systems joined forces to bring the chips, encoded with the owner's details, to Bermuda.

They are fitted inside a bike and can be detected by Police using hand-held scanners.

Yesterday Craig Stevenson, a MicroTrack director, said more than 50 new and old motorbikes had so far been fitted with the chip.

He also revealed that he hoped to talk with Transport Control Department officials about equipping staff with the scanners to help detect stolen bikes or parts.

Mr. Stevenson added: "We are very pleased with the way things are going, the telephone has not stopped ringing off the hook.''
