certain that Bermudian Valerie Nearon and partner Carol Ratcliffe would land one of the prizes in the Mid Ocean Club's Ladies Invitation golf tournament.

However, the pair shot their highest score of the three-day event yesterday to fall short in both divisions.

First day net leaders Dolly Winwick of Bermuda and Florida's Bonnie Tyler fired their second straight 68 to take the net title with an overall score of 199 while Jean Mylrea and Ginette Spinucci claimed gross honours.

Coming from three strokes back, Winwick and Tyler finished two strokes ahead of second-placed Nearon and Ratcliffe who could only manage a net 73 to finish on 201. A further two strokes behind were the pair of Claudette Gottsegen of Bermuda and June Eyton of Ontario, Canada.

In the gross, Nearon and Ratcliffe slipped from second to third following their 82. As a result, former residents Mylrea and Spinucci won by four shots despite their 79 which was their highest of the three rounds.
