Three to battle for lead
tonight's Premier Division double-header at Somerset when sole possession of top spot goes up for grabs.
Surprise teams PHC and Boulevard will meet in the 7.00 opener while Devonshire Colts will take on Somerset at 9.00.
PHC, just promoted back into the top division, have had the best possible start, handing fancied North Village and Dandy Town their first losses of the season. And if they could make it three on the trot against Boulevard, they would serve notice that they are serious championship contenders.
Boulevard, too, are off to a good start following wins over St. David's and Southampton Rangers. And while it is still early days in the 18-match league programme, teams certainly prefer to pick up points early.
In Boulevard's case they have managed well so far without their regular goalkeepers, Andre Hendrickson and Mitchell Steede, while veteran defender Dean Boyles is also sidelined.
Devonshire Colts, the third team with two victories, could make it win number three when they meet the Trojans, who have only a point so far. Tomorrow, the chasing pack will be looking to keep pace as defending champions Vasco will look to bounce back from their midweek Martonmere Cup loss when they travel to Southampton Oval to meet Rangers for the second time in a couple of weeks.
It was Vasco who reached the Martonmere semi-finals at Rangers' expense after an injury-time goal earned them a 2-2 draw. But now might be as good a time as any for Rangers to get their first win of the season.
The pick of the matches will be at Devonshire Rec. where Wolves take on Dandy Town in what will be a preview of the Martonmere final next month.
Wolves are making a name for themselves even though they are not yet at full strength and Dandy Town won't treat them lightly.
Wolves captain Anthony Thomas will sit out the match after a red card in midweek while Khari Sharrieff, brought back for the match against North Village, also has a one match ban to serve. He has already returned to school.
In the other match North Village will be anxious to end a three game league and cup losing streak at Lord's where they meet St. David's.
