More than 20 firemen from Hamilton Fire Station and the US Naval Air Station went to the departure lounge after reports of a smell of fumes.

A fire service spokesman said: "A couple of people complained of sore throats and runny noses in the US Customs area. They said they could smell fumes.

"But when we got there we could not smell anything. There was nothing there.

No-one was evacuated.'' Airport personnel were unavailable for comment.
