PHC poised to clinch Premier title
this weekend with games to spare.
No team have ever come up from the Second Division to win the First Division league title the following season, but the Zebras are now in an excellent position to achieve just that in the newly renamed Premier Division.
And it could happen tomorrow if PHC beat Devonshire Colts and the three teams below them, North Village, Wolves and Dandy Town, all lose. The worst case scenario for the Zebras would be for the Zebras to have to wait another weekend before landing their eighth league title.
Either way, they are now the firm favourites to take the title Vasco have won for the last two seasons, following their recent win over Vasco and Village's shock loss at home to Somerset Trojans two days later that left PHC with a four-point cushion.
Mathematically, only four teams are now in the running for the league, but Colts, whose focus is retaining the Friendship and FA Cups they won last season, can do their part to keep the race open for the other three contenders by beating PHC at White Hill field tomorrow.
Wolves have never won the league, but could finish as high as second. If they are within three points of the leaders going into the last game then it could be interesting as their last match is against PHC.
Dandy Town, the other team with slim hopes, also need PHC to lose tomorrow. At the same time, Town need to beat Vasco tonight at BAA Field.
That won't be an easy accomplishment but certainly Town will be gunning for victory after suffering a disappointing loss to Vasco in the FA Cup quarter-finals in midweek. Three points separate the teams in the standings, with fifth-placed Vasco needing a victory to make certain of survival.
The fight to avoid the drop continues with four teams battling to stay alive.
Somerset Trojans can virtually secure their safety with a home win over already relegated St. David's while Colts also need to win to at least keep a four-point gap between themselves and eighth placed Boulevard.
Boulevard kept their hopes alive with victory over Colts in their last outing, a result that dropped Rangers into the bottom two. But now it is do or die for both teams, with Rangers boosted by their FA Cup win over Social Club and looking for three vital points at Bernard Park against Village. Failure to do so, even if Colts and Boulevard don't win, would virtually seal Rangers' fate.
No First Division matches are scheduled for this weekend.
Instead the four Premier Division matches tomorrow will all be preceded by Crystal Palace quarter-final matches. At Bernard Park, North Village will play PHC while defending champions St. George's Colts travel to White Hill to meet Devonshire Colts.
Last year's beaten finalists, Somerset Trojans, host Southampton Rangers while the other match has Boulevard taking on Dandy Town at St. David's.
Rude Girls kept alive their hopes of another title in the Women's League with a resounding 10-0 victory over Prospect in their make-up match on Wednesday to cut PHC's lead at the top.
Chevonne Furbert led Rude Girls' scoring with five goals (ninth, 46th, 49th, 55th and 62nd minutes) while Erica Russell also helped herself to a hat-trick, netting in the 17th, 19th and 71st minutes. Catherine Clarke supported with two goals in the 23rd and 26th minutes.
Little Venice Rookies picked up their first win in the league, edging by Wolves Girls 1-0 on an Ani Delvalle goal in the 63rd minute.
