The jump bettered the 17.47 (57'4'') accomplished earlier in Grenoble and Wellman can claim the gold medal that has eluded him at the major meets with a good performance during Sunday's final.

Douglas, meanwhile, also clocked a personal best, his 20.93 seconds enough to get him through as the second best qualifier.

Douglas will contest the final today.
