Five still in the running for places in Dudley Eve
Five teams will battle for the last three Dudley Eve places in the final round of matches in the Premier Division tomorrow.
Newly promoted PHC, are certain to head the group of qualifiers as their 20 points is more than any other team can collect before the Christmas break. And with just two points separating the next five teams, it is anybody's guess who will join them, though second and third-placed Devonshire Colts and Vasco -- both with an extra game to play -- look two of the likely qualifiers.
Southampton Rangers and Devonshire Colts have the chance to make qualification very simple...by beating fifth and sixth place teams Somerset and Dandy Town. If that doesn't happen there could be a lot of `ifs and buts' in determining who goes through.
Certainly both Colts and Vasco have their fate in their own hands, though Colts do have a tricky road. They are away to Dandy Town at St. John's field in the match of the day.
Victory for the visitors would eliminate Town from contention, but a Town win would leave Colts then possibly having to beat Vasco to stay in the top four, depending on the outcome of the North Village and Somerset matches.
The Trojans are the fifth team in the equation as they still have a chance.
They are just a point behind Colts, Vasco and defending champions North Village in the standings and with plenty still to play for.
The west enders, just off a good victory over Vasco in the Friendship in midweek, face a must-win situation against second-from-bottom Southampton Rangers, a team even more desperate for points.
And because it isn't likely St. David's will take even a point off Vasco, Somerset's hopes rest with a victory over Rangers and then Colts losing both to Dandy Town and then Vasco in their make-up match next Friday.
Cup holders North Village have to beat Boulevard at St. David's in order to stay in the top four.
The Blazers have been leaking goals recently, conceding six against Town last weekend, so Village should see this as not only a chance for three points but also to boost their goals tally, just in case qualification comes down to goal difference.
Dwight Warren, a long time Boulevard player, will play against his former team for the first time since transferring to Village.
PHC dropped two points last weekend when they had to settle for a draw against the Trojans, but they will be looking to bounce back against a Wolves team that only won their second match in the league. Wolves reached the Dudley Eve last season but are out of the running this time as they only have nine points.
That will be a disappointment for many as local fans won't get the opportunity to see college students Joey Rego, John Barry Nusum and Khari Sharrieff in action during the holidays. Rego and Nusum are in the under-23 team which will embark on a short two match, five day tour of Florida which ends the day before the Dudley Eve begins.
A team that will have their college students in action are the Zebras who have Blenn Bean, Jay Smith and Stanton Lewis to call on during the holidays. It would be a big achievement if PHC can end the first half of the season as the only unbeaten team in the top division.
One team anxious to end their sequence of losses is bottom team St.David's who battled to a draw with 10 men against Town one Sunday and then two days later were being hammered 7-0 by Wolves in the Friendship. They already look certain to occupy one of the three relegation places.
Dudley Eve dates Wednesday, December 22: Team A v Team B; Team C v Team D, Devonshire Rec.
Boxing Day: Winners v Winners; Losers v Losers, Wellington Oval.
Tuesday, December 28: Semi-final, BAA Field Thursday, December 30: First final, Somerset Saturday, New Year's Day: Second final, St. David's.
Belco, who have failed to field teams in their last two matches, have become the second casuality in the Commercial Division, B Division. The BFA confirmed yesterday that Belco had pulled out of the League, joining new entry Cleveland who withdrew without playing a game.
