Top game brought forward to help out national team

Football fans will be treated to a Premier Division double-header tonight at Somerset when leaders PHC bid to open a gap on second-placed North Village at 7.00 while mid-table Somerset host Dandy Town in the feature match at 9.00.

The Zebras-Red Devils match has been brought forward from Sunday at the request of national team coaches so as to give the Bermuda players from those teams an extra day's rest ahead of Tuesday's friendly with Canada.

Village are seeking revenge having lost twice to PHC this season, including a 3-2 defeat on Boxing Day which ended their reign as Dudley Eve champions.

PHC have a four point cushion at the top as the second half of the league campaign resumes after the Christmas break.

The two other teams level on 16 points with North Village are Vasco and Devonshire Colts, the Dudley Eve finalists. While that tournament brought success for Colts, it also brought a couple of suspensions as striker Aljame Zuill and defender Jermel Simmons are both ruled out of their team's match at Southampton Oval because of too many yellow cards.

Rangers, too, will miss two key players as they try to climb at least a couple of places away from the relegation zone. Jason Raynor and Donnie Charles are both banned because of too many cards.

With three teams going down it will be a mad scramble for survival in the second half of the season. Presently just six points separate second-from-top North Village from second-from-bottom Southampton.

St. David's, nine points adrift at the bottom, are fighting against the odds to survive. And their opponents, Boulevard, are facing the possibility of joining them in the drop.

In tomorrow's other match Vasco host Wolves at BAA Field without the suspended Kuma Smith who is serving a one-match ban, though Sinclair Gibbons returns from suspension. Leslie Trew of Somerset is also banned for one match.

Social Club will bid to reclaim the leadership in the First Division, having lost it to Devonshire Cougars on Thursday when they beat Prospect 3-1. Philip Clarke (39th), Shawn Smith (57th) and Jahkee Smith (77th) netted for the Cougars who avenged their 3-1 opening day loss to Prospect. Dave Geraghty replied for Prospect 10 minutes from the end.

Social Club and Ireland Rangers will continue their battle for the lone promotion spot when they meet Paget and St. George's respectively.

Social Club, anxious to return to their glory days of the past, know they must beat bottom team Paget at Bernard Park while Ireland Rangers host St. George's at Malabar Field. For the visitors, Mackie Crane is serving a one-match ban.

Somerset Eagles and Hamilton Parish, two teams who failed to show themselves as serious promotion contenders in the first half, will meet at White Hill field. They played to a 4-4 draw on the opening day.

The BFA also announced yesterday that the two Commercial League matches at Somerset today -- PHC v North Village Rams and Somerset Extros v Tuff Dogs -- have been postponed and will take place on January 22.

Missing: Kuma Smith (left) will be absent from Vasco's game with Wolves due to suspension.
