Governor salutes teens at awards' ceremony
Governor Thorold Masefield paid tribute to 36 Bermudian teenagers after presenting them with Duke of Edinburgh Awards on Thursday.
And he hailed scores of parents and teachers who encourage youngsters to take part in the annual special achievement scheme.
His Excellency, speaking at the Government House awards ceremony, said: "The scheme enables people of a certain age to be taken seriously and to participate fully in society.
"It's probably one of the first opportunities for them to be treated as young adults with the emphasis on the adults and not on the young.
"People value them for what they have done, what they have contributed and the way they have acted within the community and with others.'' Twelve pupils from Bermuda High School received the awards, seven each from Saltus and Mount St. Agnes, five from Warwick Academy, three from Berkeley Institute and two from St. Paul's.
All the students earned bronze or silver awards for achievements in a community service, skill and sport.
But the Governor added: "This scheme cannot operate without the encouragement and support of parents, families and teachers and the co-operation of schools.
"We also need to thank the people who allow these youngsters to help and work in their premises.
"A big thank you to you all.'' More than 100 guests -- including parents, teachers, MPs and Youth and Sport Minister Tim Smith -- were at Thursday's ceremony.
