World Select keeps Gibbons on the move
cricketers, can also lay claim to being one of the most travelled.
Prior to this season his career had taken him to countries such as the United States, Canada, the West Indies, England, Holland, Pakistan and Singapore.
Now added to that list are Sri Lanka, India, New Zealand and Australia following a whirlwind tour with a World Select headed by former West Indies skipper Alvin Kallicharran.
The trip lasted just over a month and the Bailey's Bay and former Bermuda international this week described the tour as one of the best he had ever experienced.
Gibbons said he felt privileged to have travelled with and met so many world renowned players, and was particularly honoured to have been chosen as the Select team's vice-captain.
"The experience one gathers in travelling in this sort of company and playing in the different countries is tremendous,'' said Gibbons.
"Wherever you go it is different -- the pitches, the conditions and the cultures.'' Among others on the tour were West Indians Collis King, Alvin Greenidge, Robert Haynes and former Test great Desmond Haynes as well as former England pace bowler Neil Foster.
The team played a total of 19 games in four countries, winning 12 and losing seven.
Gibbons played in 12 of those matches, scoring a total of 408 runs, his highest knock being an innings of 86 in New Zealand.
His best bowling figures were recorded in Melbourne, Australia where he took five for 28.
In Sri Lanka, the World Select played two matches against an Under-25 Select comprising several players who are pressing for a place in their country's Test team.
In the first of those two games, Gibbons was struck in the chest by Test fast bowler Chavinda Vaas and forced to retire from batting. But he was able to play again in India shortly afterwards.
"It was by far the best tour I have ever been on, everything went as scheduled. There were no hitches, very well organised,'' said Gibbons.
"One of the highlights was playing four day-night matches, two in New Delhi and two in Melbourne. We had to use white balls and coloured clothing. It was very interesting.'' Wherever they travelled the players got the chance to play on Test grounds and against several former and future Test players.
According to Gibbons, the tours by the World Select are well sponsored and the players well received by the host countries.
This was his third tour with the group. The first saw him travel to India and Pakistan and the second to Singapore.
Singapore could be the next country they visit. A Sixes Tournament is scheduled there in August and Gibbons said that many of the team members were keen to participate.
"If invited I'll definitely be interested,'' he said.
