Island strikers featured in UK soccer magazine

recent issue of Shoot magazine ...even if Bermuda was mistakenly referred to as part of the Caribbean.

The popular weekly magazine ran a feature on seven players from the region who are making a name for themselves in the English game.

Under the headline "Windies Wonders'' the article, which followed a feature on Aston Villa's Dwight Yorke, mentioned how Yorke, who hails from Trinidad and Tobago, wasn't the only English-based star to play for a Caribbean national team.

With photos of both Lightbourne and Goater -- as well as five other players -- the short article mentioned how Lightbourne was now breaking into the Coventry team after his summer arrival from Walsall and that he was "a hero on the island of Bermuda''.

Goater was referred to as a "prolific striker'', having banged in 60 league goals in the last three seasons at Rotherham and Bristol City.

Also mentioned was Barbados-born Greg Goodridge, Goater's team-mate, and Rodney Jack, the St. Vincent and Torquay forward who has attracted attention from Newcastle.

Clint Marcelle, also of Trinidad and Tobago, got a mention for his contribution to Barnsley's promotion into the Premiership last season. Also featured were Robbie Earle of Wimbledon who has Jamaican connections and Paul Hall who, although English by birth, now represents Jamaica along with Earle and Portsmouth team-mate Fitzroy Simpson.

SHAWN GOATER -- one of a growing crop of soccer players from Bermuda and the Caribbean region now playing in England.
