Smith's hopes gone with the wind . . .
literally blown away in yesterday's half-marathon from St. George's to Hamilton.
As expected, Smith was a clear winner in the 13.1 mile race but, battling strong headwinds, he never came close to the one hour eight minute target which would have earned him the cash bonus from race sponsors, British American.
His winning time of 1:13.31, however, was still an impressive performance on a day when any chances of a half-marathon record were thwarted by the blustery conditions. And because of Smith's strong showing, the sponsors added another $500 to the $500 first prize which will go towards the athlete's Olympic training campaign.
Second across the line was veteran Harry Patchett followed by another runner in the Masters (over 40) category, Rod Allen. Maria Conroy Haydon was a clear winner among the women.
Last night full results were still not available.
BEHIND TIME -- Kavin Smith crosses the finish line in yesterday's half marathon more than five minutes outside his target time.
