Murder victim Kumi Harford was a high-ranking member of the 42nd gang and so is his brother Jakai Harford, according to a police expert.Sergeant Alexander Rollin added that Kumi Harford’s alleged murderer Antonio Myers is high up in rival gang Middletown.Sgt Rollin, of the Gang Targeting Unit, was asked by prosecutors to share his expert opinion during the Supreme Court case against Myers, 25, of Rambling Lane, Pembroke.He told the jury: “I consider Myers to be a member of the Middletown gang.”He later added: “He would be a higher ranking member of the Middletown gang.”Kumi Harford, 30, was shot multiple times as he sat in his car on St Monica’s Road, Pembroke, around 5am on December 5, 2009.Sgt Rollin said of him: “I consider Kumi Harford to be a member of the 42nd gang.”He later described him as “high-ranking”.The jury has previously heard how Jakai Harford, 28, helped put his brother into a car to take him to hospital on the night he was shot.Sgt Rollin said yesterday: “Jakai Harford is a high-ranking member of the 42nd gang. He would be considered a shot-caller.”A shot-caller is “a high-ranking member of a gang that will give orders to lower ranking members of the gang,” Sgt Rollin said.He explained Middletown is an offshoot of Parkside; the two gangs are allies and their members are friendly with each other.He said Middletown territory encompasses Middletown Lane, Rambling Lane and King Street in Pembroke.Parkside’s area is Court Street, Dundonald Street, Princess Street and Elliott Street in Pembroke.Sgt Rollin described 42nd territory as being St Monica’s Road and the numerous side streets that come off it.“The 42nd gang are rivals of the Parkside gang and Middletown gang. Members of Parkside and Middletown do not go into the 42nd area, the St Monica’s area,” he added.“Likewise, members of the 42nd gang from St Monica’s do not come into Parkside or Middletown territory.”He also told the court: “In the last three years the feud between Parkside-Middletown and 42nd has escalated to new heights. The exact root cause is unknown, but I’m aware it revolves around the sale of controlled drugs.”Sgt Rollin arrested Mr Myers on suspicion of the murder of Kumi Harford on the afternoon of May 26, 2010 on Middletown Lane, Pembroke.He said he’s known Mr Myers for around eight years and has never known him to have a job.Sgt Rollin also responded to questions about a man named David Cox, saying: “I consider David Cox to be a member of the 42nd gang.”The jury heard earlier in the case that Mr Cox was involved in an altercation hours before the Harford murder, which prosecutors allege led to the killing.Witness Mandaya Thomas told police Mr Cox, 31, got into an argument with Neika, the mother of a man named Yusef [JuJu] Williams, at the Devonshire Recreation Club.Mr Harford was also at the club that night.According to Sgt Rollin, Mr Williams, his mother and her husband live on Middletown Lane at a house Mr Myers frequents.Ms Thomas told police when she later saw Mr Harford in his car on St Monica’s Road, “I told Kumi to get off the streets because of what had happened at the Devonshire Recreation Club.”Prosecutor Ms Smith asked Sgt Rollin if JuJu Williams had any connection with Mr Cox. He replied: “Just that JuJu is a Middletown gang member and David is a 42 gang member. There will exist a rivalry between them.”Defence lawyer Jerome Lynch QC cast doubt on Sgt Rollin’s knowledge of gang members.“I couldn’t help but notice that you’re white,” he told the officer. “How well do you know these men who are part of the gangs? Do you go to dinner, do they come around to your place in the evenings?”Sgt Rollin replied: “I spend a lot of time on patrol. I always use the analogy that I see them more than my own family.”Mr Myers denies murder and using a firearm and the case continues.
