Amendments to Criminal Code, Stamp Duties tabled in House

Three bills for discussion were tabled on Friday in the House of Assembly, one to tidy up a law passed last year and two are in accordance to the new Budget.

The passage last year of the Abolition of Capital and Corporal Punishment Act made the punishment of Police officers helping or permitting a prisoner's escape a life sentence.

This was criticised in both upper and lower chambers of Parliament. The Criminal Code Amendment bill of 2000 seeks to change the penalty back to a three-year jail term for offences 135(1) and 138(1).

The Stamp Duties Amendment Act 2000 will generate $750,000 in revenue when passed.

It allows for changes in the values of property and property related transactions, such as conveyances.

The adjustment of the sin tax on tobacco and the cut on the duty for cut flowers have been wrapped up together in the Customs Tariff Amendment Act 2000.

The duty on the cut flowers will be reduced to 22.25 percent while the duty on tobacco will be changed by 2.3 cents per cigarette to ten cents per cigarette.

Government expects $140,000 and $1.1 million in revenue respectively from these changes.
