Kavin claims national cross country title
Championships, but it was not without a battle as college student Jay Donawa gave the champion a stiff challenge at Ferry Reach Park.
Donawa shadowed Smith for most of the race, before finally succumbing to the demanding pace set by Smith.
Smith, gearing up for a run at qualifying for next year's Olympic Games in Atlanta and the following Commonwealth Games, broke the tape in 41 minutes, three seconds, less than a minute ahead of Donawa, who clocked 41:51.
The pair made mincemeat of the rest of the field, with Jamal Hart trailing in a distant third, having clocked 45:00.
Enduring a much easier route to the winners circle was female champion Jennifer Fisher, as she took both the open and masters division in 37:33.
Second was Lynn Kynoch (39:24) followed by Jane Christie (41:27).
Harry Patchett won the male masters division in 46:51, with Mike Whalley second (51:02) and Simon Boddy (51:56) third.
Among the secondary boys Garon Wilkinson placed first in 35:42, while Patrina Swan (30:50) topped the secondary girls division. Lamont Marshall captured the primary boys category in 12:16, while Tiffany Eatherley did likewise among the girls, clocking 14:03.
UNBEATABLE -- Kavin Smith is the champion.
