roads and areas of the former US Naval Air Station -- now known as Southside.

The news was revealed by Bermuda Land Development Company spokesman Don Grearson.

The St. David's Place Names committee includes residents Gary Lamb, Anthony Paynter, Nancy Hooper and Derek Carlington. They will be assisted by the Bermuda Archives' Karla Hayward.

They will compile a list of names for the area with special care being taken to apply names to places that are close to their original locations.

One way they will seek to do this is through discussion with old St. David's islanders and other Bermudians about the area before it became a US base.

Old survey maps of the area, photographs and drawings will also be consulted.

The plan is to also provide brief histories for each of the old place names.

One gentleman the group will consult with is 93-year-old Gary Pitcher.

He said: "Here on the base, the Americans made so much change. It is nothing like the original. It was all planting land and it will be very difficult to spot what it was. It will probably take a few years.'' However committee member Mr. Lambe was more hopeful. "I think there is a good chance that we will recover the history. We will be talking to Pops Hayward who is up on the history of the area.''
