Eagles ambushed by Robin Hood
Talk of a mismatch preceded this FA Cup preliminary round tie at White Hill Field yesterday with the heavily favoured Eagles expected to cruise to a comfortable victory.
But instead it turned into a day of humiliation for the Second Division side as they were decisively beaten by their Commercial Division opponents in the round's biggest upset.
Twenty seven year-old American Jeff Alpaugh, who hails from Boston, completed Eagles' embarrassment with two of Hood's goals, the other two coming from Colin McQueen and Tim Perry.
The lone Eagles tally was scored by forward Everett Wellman.
Eagles were rocked early despite dominating the opening exchanges. They fell behind 1-0 after 16 minutes when McQueen headed home a cross from Perry and then went two down two minutes later when Alpaugh steered home a cross from Perry after goalkeeper Tyrone Simons failed to hold onto the ball.
The pattern of play continued for the rest of the game with Eagles always proving capable of advancing deep into Hood's defence but woefully inept when it came to finishing. Time and time again shots were fired wide or over the goal.
After Oscar Riley and Terrence Christopher had blown chances, Wellman fired home a free kick from 18 yards to reduce Hood's lead to 2-1 before the break.
With centre-half McQueen and Malcolm Moseley holding the defence tightly together, Hood withstood plenty of pressure when play restarted.
But frustration began to set in for the home team as shots either sailed wide and over goal or forwards had the ball taken away when they were within shooting range.
It was against the run of play that Perry snatched the third goal when he netted from close range after 67 minutes.
Then during another counter attack Hood went ahead 4-1 when goalkeeper Simons mysteriously allowed Alpaugh to steal the ball from his possession and lob it home from about 25 yards.
Hood 'keeper David Wright pulled off some fine saves as time ran out with Eagles well beaten.
St. David's 2 Southampton 1 (after extra time) A goalkeeping error by Garry Williams two minutes into extra time sent Southampton Rangers crashing to their first defeat of the season at St.
David's Oval, and out of the FA Cup.
Shea Pitcher's inswinging free kick from the right seemed harmless enough, but Williams with no pressure on him allowed it to slip from his clutches and into the net.
The setback proved to be more than Rangers could bear as they no longer could regain their stranglehold.
St. David's, who took an early lead through Worrell Bean before sustaining relentless Rangers pressure, played with more poise once the winning goal was scored and looked the more likely to score again.
Patrick White enjoyed an outstanding match in the heart of the Islanders' midfield where he battled continuously with Rangers captain Pernell Brangman.
White received fine support from Shane Weeks and Pitcher again did yeoman's work at the back as Rangers repeatedly pressed forward.
Bean's opening goal, after only two minutes, resulted from a defensive error as the winger pounced on Jason Burgess' miskick and gave Williams no chance.
Jamel Warren and Lionel Cann went close for the home side and Weeks drew applause from the crowd even though the well-struck volley that Williams turned for a corner was always going wide.
Rangers' first shot on goal did not come until the 54th minute and 10 minutes later they were level when Erskine Brangman swivelled on a bouncing ball from 15 yards and hooked a fine shot past Dale Fox. The equaliser was no less than Rangers deserved for their second-half domination and Eugene Pitt could have won it for them with six minutes remaining.
Craig Darrell superbly slipped his marker and slid the ball to Pitt on the left, but the midfielder rushed his shot and Fox had easy pickings.
Referee Stuart Crockwell went to his book four times to caution Weeks, Warren, Del Hollis and Chucky Waldron, all of St. David's.
