The deadline for nominations for the post is next Friday, the Corporation of Hamilton has announced.

Corporation Secretary Mr. Roger Sherratt yesterday said he was not aware of any nominations so far.

Well-known travel agent Mr. Smith died last month in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

The 73-year-old had been admitted two weeks earlier with an unspecified ailment.

Mr. Smith became alderman in 1988. He was elected a common councillor in January 1971.

Among the committees he served on were those involving finance, streets, parks, wharfs, and the Fire Brigade.

Friends and colleagues paid fulsome tribute to him following his death.

The Corporation of Hamilton this week announced polling day, assuming there was a contest, would be April 21 and will last from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Normally an existing member of the corporation is elected alderman, leaving a vacancy for a councillor.

Mr. Sherratt said any registered Corporation voter could take part in the election.

Nominations should be delivered to the Returning Officer, Mr. Nicholas Dill, on Friday, April 16 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. accepting nominations with deposits of $250.

Nomination forms can be obtained from the Secretary of the Corporation during normal office hours.
