the Star Olympic class regatta in Savannah, Georgia, site of next year's Olympic sailing.

The regatta was to have been decided in 10 races over four days. But two days, Thursday and Saturday, were lost, first because of too much wind and then because there was not enough.

As a result the regatta was reduced to five races, with Bromby ending the series yesterday on 11 points, four behind winner George Szabo of the United States Olympic team.

Bromby said he was was pleased with his overall showing, particularly since he was forced to drop out of the first race after making minor contact with another boat.

He bounced back by winning the second race, was second in the third and then finished up with a seventh and another first in the final two races.

"It wasn't a big field, 15 boats, but it was one of the first looks for the Star class here in Savannah,'' explained Bromby. "A lot of the top guys were here. There was a very strong US contingent as their trials will be here in April next year. It was a first hand opportunity to have a look at the venue at the time of year their trials will be held.

"We were quite happy to win two of the races and place second in another.

After the Pan Am (Games), in which we were a little disappointed, it was kind of important to get back to winning ways.'' Completing the top five were Joe Londrigan, the 1993 world champion who was third on 16 points, John Macausland who lost to Londrigan on a tie-breaker and Alex Haggen of German who was fifth on 19 points. Tyler Morris of the United States and reigning Olympic gold medallist, Mark Reynolds, were sixth and seventh.

Bromby and crew Lee White left Georgia last night for the long drive to Boston where they will store their boat. They hope to arrive in Boston late today and will return to Bermuda tomorrow.
