Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Wilcox said the tips were merely common sense practices that people should keep in mind during the festive season.

The tips to stop crime during the Christmas period include: dividing your money up between pockets before leaving home so if you are robbed, the thief is unlikely to find all your money; never counting your money in the street and always keeping your cheque book and wallet in a safe place -- never in your back pocket; not overburdening yourself with heavy packages so that you are an easy target for crooks; either covering presents in the car with a coat or towel or locking them in the trunk -- never leave them unattended in a car in full view of strangers; and not drawing attention to yourself by wearing expensive jewellery when shopping.
