took off on Saturday with only one engine.

But USAir Flight 1459 resumed its service from the Island to Charlotte and Chicago about two and a half hours later.

Yesterday, USAir station manager Herbie Siggins told The Royal Gazette that the flight had left Bermuda on schedule at 3.25 p.m. with 121 passengers and five crew on board.

The twin-engined Boeing 737-400 was climbing when a warning light went on indicating the number one engine was overheating, he continued.

He said the crew performed the required in-flight checks on the engine but the warning light remained on so they shut the engine down and returned to Bermuda, landing at 4.03 p.m.

Airline mechanics were then called in to perform a series of checks on the engine and two hours later deemed the plane safe for use, he said.

The passengers reboarded and the flight was airborne again at 6.45 p.m. and landed without any further incidents in Charlotte at 7.59 p.m., continued Mr.

Siggins.

He added that it was the first time anything like this had happened with the Boeing 737, which has been operating between the US and Bermuda for more than a year.
