Association's Second Division for the first time in their short history.

In a surprise move the BFA have extended an invitation to the Commercial A League club to join the Second Division and they have until this weekend to respond.

The BFA made the offer after Somerset Trojans were promoted to replace disbanded Hotels in the First Division, leaving a place for possibly a Commercial League side to enter the Second Division so that there would be eight clubs competing in that league.

Herbie Chambers, president of the Dockyard-based club, confirmed yesterday that Island Rangers had received the offer and he made it clear that it was their intention to accept the invitation.

"Of course we are interested, very much so. We intend to send in the necessary paperwork to the BFA by this weekend's deadline. I'm certain about that'' said Chambers.

"It was always our long-term plan, a five-year plan that we had originally set to reach the Second Division and it so happens that things have developed a year early. Our players have always been keen to play in the higher division.'' Island Rangers finished fourth in the Commercial A League last season behind winners BAA Wanderers, Robin Hood and Lobster Pot, but none of these three teams have ever been interested in competing at a higher level -- prompting the BFA to approach the westenders.

The logical move to promote the club could have a negative impact on neighbouring Somerset Trojans who are understood to have gained the services of a number of players with ties to Island Rangers.

But as a result of the promotion some of the players may be influenced to return and help Island Rangers continue their push towards gaining an eventual place in First Division soccer.

"Perhaps it's possible that this could be the case, but we shall see. It's up to any of the players, if there are places for them with Island Rangers then all will be fine,'' said Chambers.

"At this early stage all I can say is that we were surprised about the invitation. But since these opportunities come around once in a lifetime you have to jump at them and that's what we are doing before worrying about too many other things at this time.'' Chambers' role with the club will intensify as a result of the move because he will initially act as coach of the team.
