Planning Minister to file objection

doesn't like at least one part of the new Bermuda Development Plan produced by her Ministry -- the part that describes her front yard as arable land.

"My front yard, according to the plan, is an arable field,'' she complained.

"I will be filing an objection.'' Mrs. Cartwright DeCouto represents Pembroke West Central but lives near the water on Grape Bay Drive in Paget.

The new multi-coloured planning maps show a splotch of brown -- arable land -- covering a hefty portion of a lush yard that really contains grass, shrubs, trees and flowering plants.

Mrs. Cartwright DeCouto, like property owners around Bermuda, has seen other undeveloped land put under tighter zoning restrictions.

Several undeveloped Grape Bay lots owned by the Minister have been shifted from the old Garden District, which allowed residential development, to woodland -- under which only "carefully sited'' development can take place -- or arable land.

And a strip she owns along the beach itself has been zoned woodland reserve, in which any development is forbidden.
