Derek Winfield Wade, 37, admitted speeding at 56 kph and also pleaded guilty to not paying a fine and possessing cannabis.

The speeding offence took place on April 22 on Reid Street, said prosecutor Sgt. Kenrick James.

When Acting Magistrate the Wor. Arthur Hodgson imposed the fine, he told Wade to think of how else he could have used the money.

"You could have bought at least five bottles of Scotch, the best, Johnnie Walker,'' he said.

Mr. Hodgson fined Wade a further $150 for not paying a $150 fine levied in January for driving an unlicensed car.

Wade also admitted possession of cannabis, saying: "It was just three bags of weed.'' Sgt. James reported that Wade was stopped by Police in Pembroke at 3.20 p.m.

on September 15. They said they were going to search him under the Misuse of Drugs Act, and found a paper twist on the floor of the car.

Upon analysis, the twist was discovered to contain 3.29 grammes of cannabis, said Sgt. James. Wade identified it and said it was his, whereupon he was arrested, and taken to Hamilton Police Station.

Wade had previous drug convictions for possession of cannabis. He was imprisoned for two and a half years in 1990 for possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

Wade said he had never denied the offence, saying that the cannabis was only for his personal use.

Mr. Hodgson said he was keeping in mind that it was Christmas, and fined him $450 for the cannabis.
