This was the view of Minister of Management and Information Services the Hon.

Michael Winfield in a statement yesterday.

"Discussion on this and other important subjects is important and healthy, and should be encouraged as we now work towards a new century,'' Sen. Winfield said. "I would like to state that this issue has not been discussed by Government in detail and no decisions on the subject have been made.'' He was responding to what he saw as recent suggestions Government has made a definitive decision concerning the establishment of casino gambling in the Island.

The Government-appointed Commission on Competitiveness is examining gambling and other less controversial ways to generate revenue from visitors.

Sen. Winfield said the Commission is tasked with examining all aspects of how Bermuda conducts business and has a fundamental responsibility to examine every possible issue which could effect the Islands future, including gambling.

"The fact that the Commission is examining the issue should not be interpreted as a statement that Government is also doing so,'' he added.
