Berkeley crowned school champs again
Schools Track and Field Championships that witnessed three records fall at National Stadium.
Berkeley seized four of the six age group categories and again it was the fairer sex leading the way, as the Pembroke school placed first in all of the girls divisions -- under-13, under-15 and over-15 -- while their male counterparts managed to take the under-15 group.
Whitney stood tall in the under-13 boys, while Warwick Secondary claimed the over-15 age group.
Berkeley totalled 367 points compared to 197 for second placed Warwick Academy and Whitney's 174, which earned them third place.
Of all the performances, this year's event will likely be most remembered for that of Laura Turner of Roger B. Chaffee.
Turner, small in stature but big on heart and desire, stole the show during the first day when she smashed the girls 3,000 metres record by almost 20 seconds, breaking the tape in 11 minutes, 34.20 seconds.
For good measure Turner returned yesterday to claim top honours in the 800 and 1500 metres, earning her the title of champion girl in the under-15s.
Also yesterday Whitney's sprint ace Jameko Gibbons eclipsed the under-13 100 metres mark, turning in a time of 12.0 seconds.
Rounding out the record breakers was fast climbing middle distance runner Jarita Dill of Bermuda High School who shaved one-tenth of a second off the previous record, with a 2:20.8 time in the 800 metres.
Berkeley's Patrina Swan stood as the champion in the under-13 girls after placing first in all three of her events, the 400 and 800 metres as well as the long jump.
In the over-15 girls honours were shared between St. George's Jahadira Harvey and Erika Russell of Berkeley. Harvey placed first in the 100 metres and was second in the long jump and javelin, while Erika Russell similarly claimed a first in the high jump combined with runner-up placings in the shot put and discus.
On the boys side Joel Duffy of Warwick Academy topped the under-13 group, showing a remarkable combination of speed and strength in winning the 800, 1500 and 3,000 metres.
Berkeley's Earlston Brown -- first in the long jump and second in 100 and 200 -- grabbed the under-15 age group.
Tokia Russell of Warwick Secondary, who was first in the 100 and 200 metres and fourth in the 400, ran off with the over-15 boys championship.
