FIFA, BFA put accent on fair play
see Bermuda Football Association join with FIFA in an attempt to put emphasis on the "spirit of fair play''.
Steps have been taken by the local association to get the message across loud and clear via a PA system before each of the two matches.
FIFA, the world's governing body, have asked all of their affiliates to become involved in the "fair play'' call and help them celebrate Saturday and Sunday as special days on this year's soccer calender.
"Throughout the world, in most of the 198 countries and territories affiliated to FIFA, football will be played with particular emphasis on the spirit of fair play. In countries as far apart as Chile and Vietnam, and as diverse as Italy and Rwanda, national associations will be joining in the effort to raise awareness of the continuing need for sportsmanship in football -- as in life in general,'' noted a FIFA statement.
According to David Sabir, BFA General Secretary, the local association are anxious to help get a message across to players, officials and spectators about the importance of fair play.
"As far we are concerned, fair play perhaps is the single most important aspect of the game of soccer as we approach the new millennium. Tomorrow night we will be reading the FIFA worldwide statement on fair play prior to the start of the two Martonmere Cup matches to all of the spectators and players.
This will be a message that will be discussed all throughout the world,'' said Sabir.
"And naturally we will be looking to incorporate the symbol of fair play between the two teams involved. Hopefully we will be able to deliver periodic messages throughout the evening.'' Sabir added: "We will be asking all of the players and spectators to not only observe but to respect FIFA's worldwide fair play day, and to let it be the beginning of a season-long campaign to increase all our efforts to play the game of soccer, to support the game of soccer with the greatest of fair play.'' FIFA announced the following code of conduct which they said encapsulated all of the sporting, moral and ethical principles for which they stand: Play to win Play fair Observe the laws of the game Respect opponents, team-mates, referees, officials and spectators Accept defeat with dignity Promote the interests of football Help others to resist corrupting pressures Denounce those who attempt to discredit the sport Honour those who defend football's good reputation "In accordance to what FIFA is doing, the BFA have always had in place issues that directly deal with the aspects of fair play. That is a very serious disciplinary policy and also the rewarding of teams at the end of the season regarding fair play awards. It shows that we have always been concerned about fair play,'' added Sabir.
