Sash and Trim has designs on the world

Bermuda interior design company, Sash and Trim, is set to go global after the firm's new co-owner put the company online with a new Web page.

Anne Steele bought into the Smith's Parish company earlier this year and has been learning the ropes with co-founder Jennifra Gray.

And she has been using her experience as a Web page designer and computer teacher to benefit the four-year-old firm, setting up www.sashandtrim.bm.

"I have been working on the Web page for the company and we are almost there - there is just so much to do here that I don't get all the time I would like to work on it!" said Ms Steele.

"But computers allow us to do our work more easily. Customers can see our products on-line without coming into the store. And we can send material samples out to customers by e-mail. It is amazing what you can do."

The company has also being doing some of its research using its computers and Internet, giving them access to interior decorators and swatches from around the world.

Ms Steele found out by chance that the former co-owner was looking to sell her half of the business to spend more time with her children and her husband's firm.

And within three weeks of making the enquiries, she had the deal signed and sealed.

The company not only does interior design, but also sells cushions, accessories, mouldings, fancy materials, furniture, doors, windows and shutters.

Sash and Trim has two other employees - Kevin Hendrickson, the company's carpenter and Kim Hughes, another interior designer.

"It is great fun working here," said Ms Steele. "We all get on tremendously well and gel together as a team very easily."

And now the company is moving also into wholesale of fabrics to the architects and designers on the Island. They have just signed a contract to sell materials by Lee Jofra, Mulberry, Laura Ashley and Kravet.

"Within the next few months the fabrics will be arriving in Bermuda," said Ms Gray, who has masterminded the idea of retailing the fabrics wholesale. "Since Anne arrived, we have been doing some brain storming, and this is one of the things we came up with. It will save our customers a trip to New York."
