Woman causes plane to divert to Bermuda

A 35-year-old woman, who threatened passengers on an airplane and caused it to divert to Bermuda, was yesterday receiving treatment in St. Brendan's Hospital.

Airport operations manager Jack Gordon yesterday told The Royal Gazette Continental flight 293 enroute to Puerto Rico from Newark, New Jersey diverted to Bermuda as a result of the incident on Wednesday night.

Mr. Gordon said the woman began threatening some of the 108 passengers.

The crew searched her hand bag -- found no weapons -- and managed to confine the woman to the back of the plane.

Mr. Gordon added that the flight touched down in Bermuda shortly after midnight and the woman was escorted off the plane by Police.

Police Spokesman P.c Gary Venning said the woman, who was travelling with her six-year-old daughter, was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for examination and was later referred to St. Brendan's.

Last night, Police were still trying to reach the woman's relatives and refused to release her name until that occurred.

There is some suggestion that the woman, who does not speak English very well, might be from Peru and might have been on her way to Puerto Rico to meet her husband.

P.c. Venning said hospital staff, with the help of Social Services, were looking after the woman's daughter.
