Aires Cordeiro Rego, 31, of Abbot's Cliff Road, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to driving while impaired on Middle Road on October 31, this year.

Prosecuting, Sgt. Rex Osborne said that Police attended the scene of an accident on Middle Road in Devonshire. "The defendant had been driving a car and demolished a private wall,'' he said. "On being spoken to by Police it was discovered that he smelled of liquor.'' Police found that Rego was over the legal limit when tested. He later told officers that he could not remember the incident.

Defending, Mr. Wilhelm Bourne said that Rego was not really a drinking man.

"Because of his unfamiliarity with drinking, when he does drink alcohol it works very quickly on him,'' he said.

"Some people can only take one, others can take 10. He is the type of person that can only take one.

"He has pleaded guilty because he now faces the fact that he must stop taking alcohol before driving because he cannot handle it.'' Rego is a US citizen married to a Bermudian. He said he had not been drinking alcohol for nine months.

Sgt. Osborne revealed that he had been fined $350 and disqualified for 12 months in July, 1991, for impaired driving.

Senior Magistrate, the Wor. Will Francis said: "I accept what counsel is saying, but I have to bear in mind that you were here just a year ago for this serious offence.''
