The Bermuda Regiment Band's Front Street parade was to have started at 8 p.m.

on Wednesday.

But the band's director of music Capt. Barritt Dill called it off at the last minute.

Many among the crowd were visitors hoping to take photos of pomp and ceremony.

"We were extremely disappointed,'' said Mr. Jack Hartman, from Massachusetts.

He was visiting Bermuda with his wife for the tenth time. They were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary.

"There must have been 200 other people here. There was a lot of disappointment.'' said Mr. Hartman.

He added the parade -- a foretaste of the Remembrance Day ceremony -- had been well advertised.

"An announcement was made about there being no temporary barriers. Even though the band was already there, the parade couldn't go ahead. It was such a shame.'' Lt. Col. Allan Rance, from the Bermuda Regiment, sympathised with the people.

"We are very sorry, but the show could not go on. The band was also disappointed.'' He said setting up barriers was carried out by the Police and the Corporation of Hamilton.

Asked why they had not been erected, he replied: "It's a good question. We are trying to determine exactly why. I don't know the answer at this time.'' Lt. Col. Rance said the parade was a monthly fixture during the winter months.

In the summer there were monthly retreat ceremonies, which were more formal.

"The parades are popular attractions. They feature about an hour of various selections of marching tunes.

"We like to entertain our guests and the local people alike.'' No-one from the Police was available for comment last night.

Mr. Roger Sherratt, secretary of the Corporation of Hamilton, said he was unaware personally of the parade.

"I will certainly check into it, and make sure the barriers are put out next time.''
