Delta starts new low fare service
launch a new low-fare service to Orlando and four other Florida cities on October 1.
The new service, Delta Express, will feature daily, nonstop service from 10 Midwest and Northeast cities.
The service will begin with 62 flights, gradually increasing to 128 flights by January, according to Skip Barnette, managing director of Delta's low-fare business unit.
Delta announced the initiative nearly a year ago in an effort to address stiff competition from low-fare rivals like Southwest Airlines Co.
Ronald Allen, Delta's Chairman, said the new venture was designed to offer travelers a greater range of low-fare options.
"In addition to low 21-day, 7-day and walk-up fares, travellers will enjoy assigned seat selection, in-flight amenities and the benefits of Delta's SkyMiles frequent flyer programme,'' Allen said.
Flights will offer snacks and drinks, but no meals. First-class and business-class travel options will also be eliminated to make room for more passengers, Delta executives said.
In addition to Orlando, Delta Express will serve Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, and West Palm Beach.
The service will be available from 10 Northeast and Midwest cities -- Hartford; Washington, D.C.; Indianapolis; Louisville; Boston; Springfield; Newark; Columbus; Philadelphia; Providence/Newport; and Nashville.
The service will maintain a dedicated fleet of 25 Boeing 737-200 aircraft.
Delta flies to Bermuda from Atlanta and Boston.
