ambitious modernisation and expansion plans, it was revealed Wednesday.

One objection is from environmental pressure group Save Open Spaces, while another is in petition form, with 19 householders around the Cataract Hill area protesting at the plans.

Last month the Rafael Group, which runs the hotel, re-applied to the Development Application Board to develop its South Shore site.

SOS spokesmwoman Diana Antonition said the group's objections centred around the number of guest cottages and a desire to protect two areas of open space bordering the site.

Ms Antonition added: "There was nothing really major -- but if they get permission for what they are asking for, they could come back in the future and ask for that open space.'' She said that SOS were also concerned about the 29 cottages planned for the site.

She explained: "That's a lot of units in a small site and each one has a pool.'' Ms. Antonition also said SOS were worried about the extra traffic which would be generated on already-congested South Shore Road.

The hotel's plans also include a new conference centre, entrance, parking and tennis courts.
