Artisans and workmen honoured in the building of 50-year-old City Hall
The Corporation of Hamilton held a ceremony to honour the carpenters, masons and stone cutters involved in building City Hall.
The event was held as part of Imagine Bermuda 2009's second annual roof week, which celebrates Bermuda architecture.
The new City Hall was officially opened on February 11, 1960 by the then Governor Maj. Gen. Sir Julian Gascoigne.
Wilfred Onions, an outstanding Bermudian Architect designed City Hall to reflect a traditional Bermuda cottage. Built of Bermuda limestone blocks, City Hall is the last large building to make extensive use of native Bermuda Cedar by local carpenter Andrew Simmons.
Local craftsman, the late Mr. George Trott, made the magnificent Canadian style chandeliers hanging in the lobby.
Many of the original craftsmen and their descendants were in attendance on the steps of City Hall for Monday's ceremony.
