rude awakening when they return home.

Transport Minister Wayne Furbert said yesterday that there may be no jobs available for these students at the Bermuda International Airport.

"What they have to realise is that with only one airport there comes a point when there are sufficient bodies to man it.

"One has to say that those people studying airport disciplines should pick up another discipline in case there's nothing available when they get home.'' One of these could possibly be meteorology and Mr. Furbert noted that Bermudians were being sought to fill positions in this area.

But in other areas, like air traffic control, there were no job vacancies.

There were six controllers working at the airport already which was enough for a facility of that size.

And Mr. Furbert pointed out that the majority of the staff at the airport were young, so it was unlikely that they would be leaving soon unless, for some reason, they grew tired of what they were doing.

There were four understudies for management positions and the Minister noted the youngest manager would be 28 when he takes over the airport operations manager position in June.

The staff were also mostly Bermudians, he added. Last June there were about 50 non-Bermudians but now there were only 18.

Mr. Furbert said it was this successful Bermudianisation of the site which had led to the lack of jobs.

The only opening in the near future was for a general manager, he added.

But he said it had not been decided when advertising for someone to fill the position would begin.
