Premier heaps praise on UN students

High praise: Premier Dr. Ewart Brown and Education Minister Randy Horton congratulate the students who presented the water catch plan to the UN.

Bermuda’s student ambassadors were honoured with a certificate for their presentation to the United Nations.

Premier Ewart Brown and Minister of Education, Sports and Recreation Randy Horton met with the 16 students who attended the 31st United Nations International High School-UN conference.

To recognise the students’ accomplishments, Dr. Brown presented them with a certificate commending them on their participation as well as bags from the Department of Tourism. Dr. Brown said: “You students did something that we try to do all the time in Tourism.

“You did in one day what sometimes takes us a month. You talked at the centre of world affairs and talked to people about something that is distinctly Bermudian which is how we catch our water.”

The students haven’t finished working, however, as Dr. Brown added: “Thank you so much for going to the UN and telling the world how we do it. Now the challenge is you have to keep doing. Work breeds work.”

The theme of the conference, which was held over two days on March 1 and March 2 this year, was “Global Warming: Confronting the Crisis”.

The UNIS-UN conference investigated climate change and its effect on the political, environmental and economic spheres of the world as well as proposing ways to mitigate the effects, which is why the Bermudian students attended and took to the podium.

At the conference the students presented a rain catch prototype modelled after Bermuda’s white roofs, which help homes across the Island catch rain.

Mr. Horton said: “If accepted by the UN, these prototypes will be introduced in six communities across the world including Kenya, Mexico, Ghana and Haiti.

“At the conclusion of their presentation the students received a hearty applause and I must say, I was extremely proud of these young people.”

Mr. Horton concluded saying: “The prototype you came up with at the end of the day will provide assistance to people across the world in bringing a better quality of life.”
