Tucker relishing selection headache

Kenny Thompson looks on as Damon Ming (far right), John Barry Nusum (centre) and Domico Coddington (left) take part in a sprint drill during national team training at National Sport Centre's North Field yesterday.

Coach Keith Tucker has a well-stocked squad to select from for Bermuda's crunch encounter against Cayman Islands with his trio of overseas professionals fit and raring to go.

New England Revolution's Khano Smith returns from injury after missing the first leg, with Philadelphia Kixx's John Barry Nusum and Ipswich Town starlet Reggie Lambe also available for Sunday's World Cup qualifying showdown in the Caribbean.

It leaves Tucker facing a selection quandary with US collegiate player Tyrell Burgess also included in Friday's travelling party.

"It's exciting just to see Khano Smith and John Barry Nusum training together," said Tucker. "With those guys back, as well as Reggie Lambe, we're ready to give Cayman a real whooping.

"Reggie Lambe's confidence is still great and his vision is getting better and better.

"Every training session he seems to show us more and more. Then there's Tyrell Burgess who is currently sitting some exams but will be meeting us at Miami Airport.

"The only players missing are Antonio Lowe and Jason Davis who have exam commitments. I feel for them because this is their turn but it can't be helped.

"For me the question is who is going to play?

"It's huge game for us and we're all geared up for it."

The former Howard University coach said influential defender Kevin Richards, who missed PHC's title clincher due to work commitments, would be joining the squad in Cayman.

Burly striker Stevie Astwood is also believed to be nearing full fitness and could play some part in the crucial match, albeit as an impact substitute.

"Stevie's training well and is getting sharper and we need to take him with us," said Tucker. "If things get tight Stevie's the sort of player who can really make a difference from the bench.

"Kevin will be meeting us out in Cayman, which I'm delighted about.

"He's become a real leader for us and is a naturally fit player. He plays football from the heart and is a passionate player. He's a good man to have around."

Tucker also heaped praise on his assistant Kenny Thompson who returned to the national team set-up prior to Bermuda's confidence boosting victory over MLS outfit Colorado Rapids earlier this month.

"The players have been looking great in training and Kenny's really got them working well together.

"He's done an exceptional job since he returned and our confidence has really grown since beating Rapids.

"I was really impressed with the way we kept the ball against Rapids and we managed to frustrate them.

"We are becoming a team unit instead of just a team of individuals. The players are relaxed ahead of the match and I guess this is countdown time."

The Cayman Islands' squad spent last week at a training camp in Jamaica and need either a victory, or a 0-0 draw to advance to the next round.

Trinidad and Tobago await the winners of the two-legged tie.
