“The prominent Stiles House dominated King’s Square when it was built in 1766 but had fallen on hard times as a hotel in the 19th Century and became structurally unsound. Faithfully restored by the Bank of Butterfield, it has resumed its local pre-eminence.
“Edward Stiles of Southampton, the richest merchant in Bermuda, originally built the Stiles House. In the 1870s, it was known as Kennelly’s Hotel and in the 1930s it was renamed the Somers Inn Hotel.
“The Bank of N.T. Butterfield opened its first St. George’s branch on the lower floor in 1940 and 14 years later the bank purchased the building outright.
A renovation in the 1960s removed the 19th Century wooded verandah and returned the building to its original appearance.”
Today it is a beautiful bank, pristine and polished. It proudly stands along with other notable buildings of history in our World Heritage Site, St. George’s.”
