<Bz39>Faltering Sims misses Nationwide Tour cut
After the euphoria of Nationwide Tour qualification late last year, Michael Sims came back to earth with a bump yesterday after he missed the cut by five strokes at the $550,000 Movistar Panama Championships.
The 27-year-old began his second round only one shot off the projected cut of plus three, but after two bogeys on the front nine of the 7,124-yard Panama Golf Club course, he headed to the final nine holes needing to reel of a string of birdies to stand any chance of making it through to the weekend.
A double bogey on the par-four 11th put paid to any hopes of a resurgence, however, and his second round score of 74 left him tied for 112th place at plus eight for the championships.
The Island’s best golfer will now travel Down Under for back-to-back Nationwide Tour events, the $600,000 Jacobs Creek Championships at the in Kooyonga Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia followed by the $600,000 HSBC New Zealand PGA Championships at the Clearwater Golf Club in Christchurch.
Sims earned his Nationwide playing card at PGA Tour Q School in November and therefore has automatic entry into all of the second-tier, professional Tour events.
