Webb wasn't asked to join Brown Cabinet
Former Tourism and Telecommunications Minister Renée Webb has revealed she was not asked to sit in Ewart Brown’s new Cabinet.
Ms Webb served in Government from 1998 until 2004 when she walked out of Alex Scott’s Cabinet saying he was sexist and had not moved fast enough on black economic empowerment.
But she said Dr. Brown had not offered her anything under his new Government.
“I didn’t get a call,” she said. “However, I did make it clear to just about everybody that I didn’t want to go back to Cabinet at this stage.
“My life at this moment has taken a different path and I am enjoying it. However, if you are called you have to consider it.”
She was asked about Dr. Brown remaining the Minister of Tourism and Transport despite being Premier.
She pointed out that Jennifer Smith had been Education Minister for the first few months after the PLP were elected in 1998.
And she said Dr. Brown would be able to handle the extra workload given his management style.
Ms Webb said: “He is good at is delegating, that’s been his success and I am sure he will continue to do it. So, I don’t think it will be an issue — it will be allocated to others.
“And he has very much more staff than I had. I never had a Permanent Secretary or a director for most of the time I was there.”
She said Dr. Brown also had advisors and consultants to help out. “That makes a big difference.”
But Ms Webb said Dr. Brown’s management style would keep ministers on their toes.
“He will motivate them. He won’t have any seat warmers. If you don’t produce, you will be out.”
