'The sky is the limit' for choir
It promises to be the trip of a lifetime and students from Prospect Primary School can't wait to go.
Thirty-three students are on their way to Disney World in Florida to showcase their skills as the Prospect Primary School Show choir.
They will also have the opportunity to take part in a workshop that includes voice-over techniques and a recording session with a Disney vocal artist while there for the February 27 concert.
The choir got the chance to go through the efforts of their teachers, who realised the potential of the group and wanted to take them to the next level.
Choir director Lindsey Berthiaume contacted the Disney Magic Music Days, a performing arts programme at Disney World which offers young people the opportunity to challenge themselves to acheive performance excellence at an unparalleled performance venue.
Mrs. Berthiaume said the Show Choir had to put together an audition package consisting of pictures of the members in their choir attire, a videotape of the choir performing two to three styles of songs, plus choreography for each style.
Yesterday student Kenneth Young said: "Actually, I feel excited and I'm proud of myself."
Jaqui Swan, added: "I am really happy. I feel like I achieved my goal. My advice to everyone is: try your best and you can succeed!"
Devine Easton said: "I am very excited to go and this is one of the biggest opportunities for me, I hope to get to see the people I want to see and have a great time."
When asked who she wants to see she replied: "All the princess actors, Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Minnie Mouse."
The Prospect Primary School Show choir only heard on November 16 that they had passed an audition to perform on February 27 at the Disney's Galaxy Theatre.
This disciplined and talented bunch will be performing a selection of their songs, said Mrs. Berthiaume, who added she was excited about the group's opportunity and attributed the success to the hard work and dedication of the students.
She said she was very impressed with the quality and calibre of the singers at such a young age.
"It is a wonderful thing to see these students involved in positive activities and role modelling for their peers," she said.
"This is a springboard for future accomplishment for them all. The sky is the limit and it is important they know this early on."
For some of the students it will be the first time they have travelled outside the island.
"I'm kinda nervous to go on the plane cause I'm afraid of heights, but when I go to Disney World I'll have a great time," said Percy Smith Jr.
Mrs. Berthiaume said Show Choir is an exciting addition to the active music programme, which includes other instruments such as recorders, Orff Instruments, strings, band and drumming instruments.
All the students have dreams of becoming successful, professional adults and some hope to pursue a professional career in musical theatre, teachers or doctors.
So far the Show Choir has been having bake sales to help raise funds.
They are also planning car washes, packing groceries and putting on a Christmas musical. The students are also puting together a sposorship letter to target big businesses for support.
The Show Choir is actively seeking fundraising opportunities and donations as the performance date is just three months away.
If you, or your place of employment wishes to sponsor a child, please contact the school at 292-1229.
Alternatively, you may drop off any donations to the school site at 2 Military Road in Devonshire.
