Prank earns teens 100 hours of community service

Two high school students caused $2,000 worth of damage to a van after throwing water balloons because they were bored. Bruno Vincente, 16, and Fabio Santos, 17, pleaded guilty to wilfully and unlawfully causing damage to a vehicle exceeding $60 on Thursday.

Magistrates Court heard from Crown Counsel Nicole Smith yesterday, Vincente and Santos where travelling east on Middle Road in Devonshire and the complainant, driver of a white GMC van property of Island Cleaners, was travelling west on the same road.

Santos was the rider of the bike and Vincente, the passenger. As they rode pass the complainant, Vincente threw a water balloon at the van causing the windshield to break.

The defendants were followed by a witness who wrote down the bike number. Vincente and Santos were arrested on Parsons Road and were found with a bag of water balloons.

Vincente of Friswell's Road, Pembroke and a student at Berkeley Institute, told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner: "We didn't really throw balloons at the car. It accidentally hit the car. We didn't mean to do it".

Magistrate Warner asked the boys why they decided to throw water balloons and both of them said because they were bored.

Santos, a CedarBridge Academy student of Roberts Avenue, Devonshire apologised for the incident and said they didn't mean to do it. Magistrate Warner said: "It's silliness on your part but silliness can have very serious consequences. You must both be very careful of how you conduct yourselves and what kind of decisions you make."

The pair received a conditional discharge and 100 hours of community service to get rid of the boredom, said Magistrate Warner. They must also pay for the broken windshield within 90 days.
