Perozzi title fight will go ahead — promoter

Trinidadian promoter Boxu Potts is confident Teresa Perozzi's proposed World Boxing Council title fight will go ahead on local soil at the end of March.

The North American Boxing Council (NABC) world champion's shot at the currently vacant crown was thrown into doubt two weeks' ago when it became clear that her favoured opponent, Trinidadian slugger Scroller Carrington, was intent on fighting another bout in Europe only a few weeks before her proposed battle with Perozzi.

Such a scenario was "totally unacceptable" to Potts, who feared a surprise Carrington defeat would jeopardise his event.

But after meeting with Carrington and her father last week, Potts said yesterday he persuaded her to drop the idea of what reportedly would have been a sizeable European pay day in favour a crack at the most prestigious belt in professional boxing.

Potts added he was trying to schedule the fight for the Number One Shed or the National Sports Centre on Saturday, March 24 — though none of this has yet been finalised.

The promoter is also in negotiations with a Caribbean cable network to have the middleweight fight televised live across the region.

Included on the event's card could also be Trinidad's super welterweight superstar Giselle Salandy, who is the current WBC and World Boxing Association (WBA) title holder.

Potts expects her to fight the woman who was forced to relinquish the WBC middleweight belt for not defending it within the required nine months — Yvonne Reese of the USA — who will drop down a weight for a chance to take on the all-conquering Salandy.

"The situation looks very good now that I've had a chance to talk things through with Scroller," said Potts yesterday.

"I will admit it was quite a challenge persuading her to give up the fight in Europe but once she understood that an opportunity to fight for the most important belt in professional boxing does not come along that often, she relented.

"She's in full training right now with the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment and should be in first-class shape by the end of March. It should be an excellent fight.

"I have a huge amount of respect for Teresa. She has it in her to beat the very best and if she comes through her fight with Scroller, I will do all that I can to see if we can get her a fight with (four-belt super middleweight world champion) Laila Ali.

"But as for the Scroller fight, everything is moving along nicely."

Perozzi, meanwhile, was taking nothing for granted yesterday, suggesting that until she has a contract in her hand she won't be getting too excited.

But the chance to fight for the WBC world title against an opponent she beat last year in Trinidad to claim the NABC crown was, she admitted, an exciting one.

"Of course I'd love to go for it if everything works out," said Perozzi, who was also considering an offer to fly to Kenya for a fight against another high-ranking middleweight — Conjestina Achieng — until that deal fell through.

"I've been training a lot recently and had probably the best sparring session ever at Forty Rego's gym the other day against those San-Shou marshall artists who are learning to box up there right now.

"So if it comes my way I'll definitely be ready."
