Kayaker still being sought by Police

Photo by Chris BurvilleA Police boat moves between Smith's and Governor's Island in St. George's Harbour as officers search for a missing kayaker yesterday afternoon.

An extensive Marine Police search turned up a missing kayak but the whereabouts of the man who rented it are still unknown.

The man, who was described as white and in his 20s, rented the kayak from Blue Hole Watersports at 9 a.m. Monday.

He did not produce photo identification, or leave a name, float plan or intended time of return before heading off on the green kayak.

When the individual did not return with the kayak, Bermuda Radio and the Marine Police Unit were informed and a search was launched of inshore areas such as Grotto Bay, Ferry Reach and St. George's Harbour.

The search continued yesterday with Marine Police boats Heron III and Heron IV and fisheries boat Sentinel searching the east coast of the Island.

The kayak was located at 11.37 a.m. abandoned ashore on Cooper's Island on the Southeastern side of Castle Harbour.

There was no sign of the individual who rented the kayak.

A Police spokesman could not say if the maritime search for the individual continued yesterday evening but did urge anyone with any information on the individual who rented the kayak or his whereabouts to contact the Marine Police Unit on 299-4585.

Blue Hole Watersports owner Michael Stevens said the company would consider requiring photo identification from renters in the future, in order to avoid similar incidents, but added that their kayaks were rented out for hundreds of hours over the summer without incident.
