Jones chalks up second junior title in Florida

Nick Jones captured his second International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) senior boys title in Florida yesterday, carding a four-over-par 76 in trying conditions at the Florida Classic.

The Bermudian, who started yesterday's final round holding a two-stroke lead, had an eagle at the par five, seventh but struggled the rest of the way as his short game came undone at the 7,234-yard Dave Harman-design Highlands Ridge layout.

Jones made the turn at one-under-par for the round but dropped five shots on the back nine, including a double bogey at 16.

"I had some good putts but just couldn't get them to drop," he said.

Jones led the field by as many as five-shots after 14 holes before a succession of bogeys cut it too close for his own liking.

Yet despite struggling with the putter down the stretch the Grandview Prep student, recently voted Golfweek's Junior Player of the Week, did just enough to cling to his slim lead coming in to celebrate a third overall win competing in Florida this year.

"There was no pressure on me. But I had trouble all weekend with the putter," he said. "But I'm very excited with the win and it feels very good."

On Saturday, Jones shot a one-over-par 73 to take the lead heading into the final 18 holes, his first round over par in four competitive rounds of golf.
